The Tale of Viña Maria

Vina Maria Legend

During the hot summer of 1928, the fruit from the Spanish fields produced not only the sweetest and richest fruit, but also the beginning of a beautiful love story.

A glossy haired young harvest woman called Maria was collecting the first red fruits of the season when she reached for a juicy berry and popped it quickly into her mouth. She knew it wasn’t permitted for workers to eat the fruit, but she couldn’t resist.

Since her childhood, Maria had worked the land and loved every inch of it as if it were her own. Immediately a striking man walked past and the two made eye contact. Maria knew she had been caught eating the precious fruit to which she was not permitted. She looked embarrassed and bowed at the stranger deeply to apologise to the unknown man and as she arose from her curtsy, the couple locked eyes and magic happened right then in the middle of the vineyard. The man knew she was the prettiest and most kind eyed girl he had ever seen and equally Maria just knew that this was the man of her dreams.

Suddenly more fruit arrived from the fields and the moment passed as soon as it had begun. When Maria turned back to see the man again, he was gone.Three long days past, and Maria thought about the handsome stranger day and night and wondered if and when she would see him again. Had it been simply a mirage in the heat of the afternoon?

On the third day she was summoned to the house of the master. Upon arrival in the grand house Maria straightened her old stained dress and looked around with wonder. Right then, the young handsome man walked in, this time dressed in fine clothes rather than the working clothes from their earlier encounter.  Maria felt confused and flushed with embarrassment.

‘I am Roberto’ he said with warmth whilst looking again into her eyes.  ‘I have thought of nothing since I saw you.  I invited you here to ask you to be my wife’. Maria suddenly felt light and the words ‘Si!’ (Yes!) came from her lips. Brought together by the land and the fruit, Vina Maria was born to celebrate this legend. Today the loving legacy of Maria continues with each of the 10 million bottles enjoyed in  every corner of the globe. Vina Maria is simply the most passionate wine in the world.

About Viña Maria

Over the course of nearly a century, the winemakers at Viña Maria have carefully honed their production process, and today they have developed it to nothing short of the perfect blend between art and science.

When German-born spirits-maker Rudolf Prehn first launched his winemaking operations in Spain, he did so with the intention of creating wines of the utmost quality and distinction. That was more than 88 years ago, and since then the company has spanned three generations, each of which has been equally dedicated to maintaining Viña Maria’s reputation for producing wines of the highest standard.

From selecting only the choicest grapes to their careful attention to the fermentation, clarification, and oak maturation processes, the winemakers at Viña Maria are devoted to the artistry of wine production. The proof is in every bottle, glass, and sip.

When you enjoy a glass of wine, the grapes aren’t the only things that lend it distinction.

With every sip, you savor the rich flavor of the soil in which the vines were cultivated. You taste the sun and the rain that nurtured them, and the wind that ran through their rows. More than anything, each sip of wine is a celebration of both the history that went into the vineyard’s care, and those who have poured their passion for the art of winemaking into every bottle.

That’s why Viña Maria uses grapes that have been grown in only highlands of the heat of La Mancha, Spain's most exciting wine growing area, where the fertility and purity of the soil combines with the perfection of the climate to ensure a complexity of flavor that is nothing short of sublime.

Viña Maria wines offer everything that is right and good about winemaking, from the land to your glass.
