We’re delighted to announce that the legendary French wine magazine Gilbert & Gaillard which is read by celebrities like George Clooney, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Steven Spielberg, and Meryl Streep has featured Viña Maria in their new Spring issue.
Popularly known by fans as “the most famous wine magazine in the world”, Gilbert & Gaillard distributes 197,000 copies in nineteen different countries across the globe with an estimated readership of up to 500,000 wine lovers.
Nikolas Prehn, who heads up the Asia-Pacific side of the business from his base in Hong Kong, was interviewed by Gilbert & Gaillard for an article on how Spain’s hugely important La Mancha wine region is shedding its traditional bulk wine image and moving towards a quality-focused and thoroughly modern future.
Nikolas told the prestigious magazine that although historically much of the wine produced locally used to be sent to French and Italian wine producers, today more and more winemakers are prepared to stand on their own two feet and sell their wines under their own brands. According to Nikolas, this has benefitted the whole region as it is “leading to greater modernisation in the vineyards, such as structuring vines to create a good canopy and protest the grapes from the dry climate, as well as to improve winemaking.”
Nikolas added that “the future of La Mancha will lie in promoting its most authentic varieties such as Cencibel (Tempranillo), Verdejo or Airen.” By focusing on these indigenous grapes which are perfectly adapted to the La Mancha terroir, the region’s producers have an opportunity to show the world the true potential of Spain’s winemaking heartland and secure a rock solid position in both national and international markets for years to come.
